Project at a Glance
Client: Philadelphia Zoo – Safari Quest
Architect: Urban Consultants, Inc.
Location: Philadelphia, PA
This aggressively scheduled project involved the construction of a 1,500 square foot masonry and stucco Baboon Building with specialty animal holding cages and a keeper’s support area. In front of this new building, a 1,500 square foot Baboon Exhibit Yard was erected using structural steel tube framing and stainless steel mesh. Visitors are able to view the baboons in their new yard from a boardwalk surrounding the Exhibit Yard or from elevated concrete and steel viewing platforms. In addition to overlooking the Baboon Yard, the viewing platforms and connecting walkways that were built on the former monorail steel columns and foundations allow for a safari-like perspective of the entire 65,000 square foot project area, including the newly renovated Wild Dog, Cheetah and Ibis Exhibits as well as the new Camel Walk Area.
